Task: Using the designs given in the GDD, create the 2D UI sprites for the game ‘Going Home’
Here is a list of all the 2D sprites required for the game:

I started by creating a base portrait of Aurora without facial expressions (no mouth or eyebrows). Looking at the GDD I tried to use a similar brush in Photoshop with a slightly ‘rough’ and ‘painted’ looking edge.

I then began to add expressions on top in different layers. I chose 4 basic expressions: Surprised, Excited, Happy/Content, and Unsure/Grumpy. This will allow for the character to show some emotion while the dialogue shows.

I then completed this same process for Meryl (The Manta Ray) and the Anemone.

I checked to make sure each character fitted with the text box that will be displayed when characters talk in the game.

As I went through the GDD I began to add more UI elements that were not listed in the GDD but needed to be there in order for the game to work.

I made each UI element of the inventory seperately and put them together to see what it would look like. This will also allow the 3D modellers to understand where the 3D book will be placed.

First main quest item – spicy bean. The player has to collect 3 of these which will wake up Meryl, the manta ray. The appear in the bottom right corner of the screen so the player has a clear indication of how many they need to get/how many they have. I used photos of kidney beans for reference here.
All of these elements will be put into the unity file that already contains the code for the UI. Placeholders are already being used, they just need to be replaced with these final sprites.
