An element missing from the GDD was a design for the NPC which you encounter. This NPC is static and helps to guide you along your way; so they are an essential part of the vertical slice we are making.
My task is to sketch the design, colour the character and create a turn around sheet for the 3D modeller to use when creating the character.
Brainstorming with my team we liked the idea of using an anemone as they look fairly harmless, always stay in the same spot and can come in all different shapes and sizes.
I began creating a moodboard to get ideas for the characters design.
This moodboard explores colour, shape and expression of the character.
Sketching
I began to sketch out some ideas in my sketchbook and got my peers to give feedback which I wrote beside in annotation form.

Trying to match the style of Aurora while also attempting to allow the character to have her own face and expressions.

The aim was to make this character feel very welcoming – like a mother figure, so the player feels welcome.

While creating the digital version, I realised how hard it was to differentiate the hair strands and added some lighter purple splotches to outline where the hair started and ended.

After creating the 2D UI sprite portrait, I moved onto the full body shape. I wanted a friendly and welcoming feeling to the character so the gesture was very calm and fluid.
